Live Sic Bo

Why should you play Live Sic Bo

Live Sic Bo is not the most popular casino game, but it is one of the most interesting. With its Asian origins, this game knows how to give you the excitement one gets from every game that has lived through the ages!

If you had to be asked to name one culture that knows how to gamble, it would most definitely be the Asian culture. For decades, gambling has been a tradition in all layers of society, and it should come as no surprise that some of the biggest casinos worldwide are situated in South-East Asia. With their casinos, money and gaming habits it was inevitable that the Asians brought some games along to the western world as well as some gaming culture with them. Sic Bo is probably the best example of this.

Live Sic Bo

Sic Bo: The aim of the game

The aim of this weird and wonderful game is in the simplest of manners of speaking to guess the outcome of three dice before they are rolled. A player wins by placing a bet on a betting grid, quite similarly to he or she would do in roulette, on the number or place he thinks the next roll of the dice would lead.

The History of Sic Bo: From Asia to online live dealer

This addictive dice game finds its origin in China, where it is also known as tai sai or dai siu. In more western countries it is known as big-or-small or hi-lo. Some believe that Sic Bo means “precious dice” in Chinese, a name that shows the relationship the Asians have with this game. Others believe the name to be loosely translated into “dice bowl” which is far less sensationalist, but rather more likely! Others still believe it to mean “dice pair”. Either way, what we can be certain of is that the Western world got knowledge of this game through the immigrants who spread throughout Europe and the US in the beginning of the 20th century.

With the arrival of manual laborers from China to the States to work on railroads came their gaming traditions. It was these immigrants who started playing Sic Bo in the US. In mining and railroad building camps all over the US migrants were to be seen playing the game in their multitudes. The Westerners only started to discover Sic Bo in the early decades of the 20th century, which is really farely recent.

At first, Americans adopted Sic Bo as a carnival game by the name of Chuck-a-luck, because of the action of chucking the dice out of their cage and hoping for lady luck to smile down on you while you do it! In 1970, ten years after he won a tender in Macau for commerical gambling insitutions, Stanley Ho opened a grand casino and placed Sic Bo on the main stage together with Roulette and Black Jack. This casino was highly successful, and rivalled Monte Carlo’s casinos of the time. Ho’s success prompted Nevada casinos to introduce Sic Bo, at least in their back rooms to appease their Asian clients. It was only in the 1990s that Sic Bo gained prominence in Western brick and mortar casinos, and only because China’s financial status having been improved bringing droves of Chinese tourists to Nevada.

When casinos went online, it was only natural that live Sic Bo followed suit. The game is no longer solely appealing to Asians. Live Sic Bo is not as common to find in Western online live casinos as other live dealer games, but it’s still found in enough of them to have been one of the first games to be made available live. After all, Asian casinos and games are well sought after by Western players too.  In fact, when the first live casinos appeared Sic Bo quickly got converted into a live casino game with professional croupiers giving you a terrific experience playing live Sic Bo!

Equipment Used in Sic Bo

  • Three dice
  • A dice-rolling cage
  • The Sic Bo Betting Board
  • Betting Chips

The Sic Bo Board

The Sic Bo Board can look very confusing to the first-time player, but it’s not really anything out of the ordinary and not that difficult to read once you know what the game is about.

The Sic Bo Table

The rules of Sic Bo

The rules of the game aren’t that difficult, but there are a lot of betting options with varieties in payout so the live contact you have with a dealer during live Sic Bo is an absolute advantage. Also, at first, players may find that the Sic Bo board can be a little confusing, and a dealer can explain perfectly what everything means. We will do the same in this guide, by explaining the rules to have a perfect game of live Sic Bo.

Another advantage about playing live Sic Bo is the fact that you can actually see the dealer throwing the dice and placing the bets. Some people get a feeling sometimes the online casino they’re playing at may not be as fair as they would want it to be, with live casino you can check out everything yourself! But probably the biggest advantage is the fact that you can play live Sic Bo at every time, at every place (with internet connection), in your most comfortable state of being. So grab a beer and let’s roll!

The first thing you need to know about live Sic Bo is that you bet on the outcome of three rolled dice. This means that you don’t need to be experienced to win. There are no particular skills for winning big at live Sic Bo, except for the fact that you need to wager your chances and you must be lucky.

live sic bo

Before the dice are rolled, you are requested to place your bets. There are a lot of options to bet on with live Sic Bo and each option has its own varieties and odds but we can categorise these betting options into eight different segments. The payouts are different in some casinos, so always ask the croupier to be sure of what the house is offering before you play:

  • Big or Small Bet: if you bet on Big, you bet on the outcome of the three dice to be between 11 to 17. If you bet on Small, you bet on the outcome of the three dice to be between 4 to 10. If a triple (three of a kind) is being rolled, you lose your bet. Payout for this bet is 1 to 1. The reason that the payout is so low is because the odds themselves for winning are rather high on this.
  • Odd or Even Bet: this is a bet not every casino offers. You bet on the outcome of the three dice to be odd or even. Just like the previous bet you lose when a three of a kind is rolled.
  • Double Bet: with this bet you bet on two dice with the same value being part of the outcome. In most live casinos this bet pays out 8 to 1 but you can find casinos that pay out up to 10 to 1 on a doublet bet.
  • Triple Bet: a bet with a huge payout of 150 to 1 up to 180 to 1. You guess that the outcome of the dice is going to be a specific triple, such as 2-2-2, You must be one immensely lucky player to win this one.
  • Any triple: with the previous bet you could choose a triple, now you bet on any triple being thrown: 111, 222, 333, 444, 555, 666. Payout here is 24 to 1 to 30 to 1.
  • Totals: a bet with different payouts, where you put money on the specific outcome of the three thrown dice.

Total: 4 or 17 pays between 50 to 1 and 60 to 1
Total: 5 or 16 pays between 18 to 1 and 30 to 1
Total: 6 or 15 pays 14 to 1 to 18 to 1
Total: 7 or 14 pays around 12 to 1
Total: 8 or 13 pays around 8 to 1
Total: 9, 10, 11 or 12 pays around 6 to 1

  • Two Dice Combination (also known as pair match bet): you choose two numbers which will be part of the outcome of the next roll, for example: a 2 and a 6, or a 5 and a 6. Pays 5 to 1
  • Any number (also known as single number bet): you choose a number that’s going to be in the outcome of the next roll. 1 to 1 for one match, 2 to 1 for two matches, 3 to 1 for three matches.
  • Three single number: you choose three numbers that will be in the outcome of the next roll. Very risky, pays out 30 to 1.
  • Double and single: you pick one number that will be in the outcome of the next role twice, and one other number. For example two 2s and a 3. Pays out 50 to 1.

As you can see payouts differ greatly in range, so make sure that you study the casinos well before deciding which one you want to play at.

Now, according to Chinese tradition, you must choose your lucky numbers, but these are not to be chosen by you! They are meant to choose you through the Chinese Zodiac Table of Good Fortune! Depending on what chinese zodiac animal you are, your lucky and unlucky numbers are as follows:

 Zodiac SignLucky NumbersUnlucky Numbers
Rat2 & 35 & 9
Ox1 & 93 & 4
Tiger1, 3 & 45, 7, & 8
Rabbit3, 4, & 91, 7, & 8
Dragon1, 7 & 63, 8 & 9
Snake2, 8 & 91, 6 & 7
Horse2, 3, & 71, 5, & 6
Sheep3, 4, & 96, 7 & 8
Monkey1, 7 & 82, 5, & 9
Rooster5, 7, & 81, 3, & 9
Dog3, 4, & 91, 6, & 7
Pig2, 5, & 81, 3, & 9

You basically choose your lucky numbers and the odds of the numbers winning!

So now you know how to place your bets. This is the only thing you have to do. Sit back, pray to the gambling gods, and watch as the dealer rolls the dice. Collect your winning, place another bet, or try again if you’ve lost. As mentioned earlier, live Sic Bo is not a game of skill, so if you want to play live Sic Bo for a long period of time without losing too much money we recommend you to choose bets with a low house edge. If you feel really lucky, you can of course always try out the more risky bets.

Strategy of Live Sic Bo

Because the dealer rolls the dice there is nothing like a pattern in live Sic Bo. Unless you are a magician who is able to see the future, you can’t predict anything with live Sic Bo. This makes it much more fun to play so sit back, let the dealer roll those dice and pray to lady luck that she takes a fancy to you this fine day!

Still, there are a few strategies out there which are worth a mention since they are not about beating the dealer per se, but rather about stretching your money as much as you can. The three most common strategies depend on how much you are willing to risk as a player.

The Steady Sic Bo Strategy / Beginner

(for players who want to take low risks)

This strategy requires a lot of patience because it requires lengthy play at bets that have a small house edge. This means playing at the Small and Big bets which pay out at 1 to 1. The system to use here is the 1, 3, 2, 4 system, where 1, 3, 2, and 4 are units of betting. So you may, if you’re betting in units of 10 bet 10, 30, 20 and 40; or if you’re betting in units of 1000, bet 1000, 3000, 2000 and 4000. You progress through this system and every time you win the whole system through, you start again. And you start again every time your bet loses. The strategy is such so that:

If your first bet loses, you would have lost 1 unit.

If your second bet loses, you would have lost 2 units (as you would have bet 4).

If your third bet loses, you still make a profit of 2 units.

If your fourth bet loses, you also still make a profit of 2 units.

If your fourth bet wins too your total profit is 10 units!

This means that or as long as your first two bets win you’re making a profit!

Another two systems that come recommended apart from the 1-3-2-4 system are 1-3-2-6 system and another system that goes by the name of paroli.

The 1-3-2-6 system works much in the same way as the 1-3-2-4 one.

The Paroli system is different. It is a progressive system that compounds your winnings, but doesnt chase your losses. So you basically work to increase your winnings rather than on recovering your losses. Before you start, decide on what your betting unit is going to be and how many bets you are going to make before you start taking any of your winnings off the table. The most common system is to double the bet with each win in a sequence of 3 bets. Once this is completed, you start again from scratch. You also start again from scratch in the case of a loss at any point. To give an example, if your betting unit is $100, then you bet $100, $200, $400, $100 and so on.

The Balanced Sic Bo Strategy / Intermediate

(For the players who like an average level of risk)

This is higher risk than the Steady Sic Bo Strategy but yields bigger wins, so it all depends on the level of risk you are willing to take. Basically, this strategy involves spreading the bets over more than one outcome, namely double bets and a total bet. On each turn, a player has four chances of winning.

Rather than choosing your lucky numbers, the Balanced Sic Bo Strategy requires that you choose 9 and 12. Place a bet on your winning total and then place three double bets! If you choose doubles that still win if the total you choose loses, then you will minimize the risk by some degree.

So, for example, when betting on 9, place three betting units on  a total 9, and place two betting units on double 1, 5, and 6. Equally if you choose to bet on 12, place three betting units on a total 12 and place two betting units on double 1, 2 and 6. The return on these would be 21 units and 22 units respectively in both cases.

The High Roller Sic Bo Strategy / Advanced

(for all you whales out there!)

Here you are going to aim to win three times in one go. What you would do is bet on totals 8 or 13, doubles and combinations to make it happen. So, for example:

Bet three units on a total of 8, two units on a double 1, 2, and 3 and another two units on a 3 and 2 combination, to safeguard the possibility of double 3 and 2. You’ve hence bet 11 units. Now, your return is 27 units if 8 wins, 22 units if double wins, 12 units if combo wins!

When betting on 13:

Bet three units on a total of13, two units on a double 4, 5, and 6 and another two units on a 4 and 5 combination, to safeguard the possibility of double 4 and 5. You’ve hence bet 11 units. Now, your return is 27 units if 13 wins, 22 units if double wins, 12 units if combo wins!

In choosing whether to bet on 8 or 13, the Chinese, seriously and actually, use the table above for whatever number is favourable to them by birth.

Your aim with this strategy is for multiple bets to win at one go, and trust us, when this happens, you win big!

Why play Live Sic Bo over regular online play?

Sic Bo is a game to play with others. If you’ve ever seen it or played Sic Bo in a brick and mortar casino, then you know that it is a very loud game for starters. For all the cheers and oohs and aahs that go on when someone wins and loses, you could not get that experience anywhere else that isn’t live. Having  a real dealer rolling the dice and being able to interact with the dealer and other players gives you back some of the thrill that playing online on graphics had taken away. Live Sic Bo also means that your game is not influenced by a random number generator but the dice are rollwed for real, in real time, and you are there to witness it. Random number generators are genuine, and thereis no risk to playing online in a digital environment, but some players prefer the old fashioned dice rolling, if not for anything else, for the opportunity to be able to stare at those dice until you can get them to land on your numbers. If you’re accustomed to playing Asian games or at Asian casinos, then you know how important these beliefs can be!

What is different in the Live Sic Bo version?

In Live Sic Bo, you can expect to see that a real person is your dealer. The dice are real and they are being rolled in real time. You are watching everything through a live stream from a remote casino or casino studio. Only the betting aspect is controlled through your screen. You have buttons for ‘roll’, ‘clear bets’, and ‘re-bet’ and your screen shows your current pot balance, a menu section, a section showing recent game history, and another for game settings in order to be able to personalise your interface as much as possible.

Platforms for Live Sic Bo

Sic Bo being Asian, not all software providers specialise in it, but you can rest assured that most of the big ones do, so you will have no trouble finding a trusted software provider. Playtech, for example, is one of the big companies that specialise in Sic Bo and they have a huge following in Live Asian casinos. MrLive’s Guide to Live Casino Software is a great place to start if you want to compare different software companies offering your favourite games, what they offer and where they differ from one another.
